Redesigning a pregnancy app focused on clarity, comfort and emotional support

Doula is a self-initiated mobile app concept focused on supporting women during labour. The original app felt outdated and overly complex, which conflicted with the emotional and vulnerable context in which it is used. I redesigned the app to explore how thoughtful UX and visual design can create a calmer, more supportive experience. The goal was not to add more features, but to improve clarity, accessibility and emotional comfort during an intense moment.

Design process

- Analysis of the existing app and usability issues - Redesigning navigation and screen hierarchy - Improving symptom tracking and feedback moments - Visual refinement focused on calmness and accessibility - Iterating interactions for clarity and ease of use

This project started from the observation that the existing Doula app felt visually outdated and difficult to navigate. In a situation where users are already under stress, this creates unnecessary cognitive load and friction. My focus was on redesigning the core interaction model of the app. Instead of hiding key actions behind menus, the most important functions were brought to the foreground and placed within easy reach. Primary actions such as breathing guidance, contraction support and rest were redesigned to be immediately accessible with minimal effort. To make the experience feel more personal and reassuring, I explored the use of warm colours, soft gradients and friendly visual elements. An AI-generated baby image was introduced as a personal touch, helping users feel more emotionally connected to the app. I also redesigned the symptom tracking flow. Rather than overwhelming users with data, symptoms can be logged quickly and reviewed through simple visual overviews. This allows users to reflect on patterns without requiring attention during the moment itself. Throughout the redesign, decisions were guided by the emotional context of use. The interface was intentionally kept calm and minimal, prioritising clarity and reassurance over feature density. The final concept demonstrates how UX and visual design can reduce friction, support emotional needs and create a more intuitive experience in a highly sensitive context.
